More about this scene

This sturdy bridge over the River Wharfe, linking Boston Spa with Thorp Arch, was built in 1770. Along the banks to the east is the old Spa Baths, now converted to housing. A little to the west of here, near the weir, is the old mill, also now luxury houses. Spa water was discovered in 1744 by a farm labourer, John Shires, who was dumb - his mother had cut out his tongue when he was a young boy. Although strenuous efforts were made to place Boston Spa at the forefront of the health resort list, it was always overshadowed by the charms of Harrogate.

I remember some names ,Theresa Thompson, Dorothy Wray , Roselyn Gallagher, Kathleen and Margaret Riley, to name a few. I was one of the youngest at that time in the home. It would be nice to know if anyone else was there with us.

I first went to the primary school in Clifford, St. Edwards I think. The headmaster was a Mr Haynes. Then I attended the John Fisher school in Harrogate. Does anyone know if St. Joseph's children's home in Boston Spa still exists? Glenda My surname was Hughes.
Hi Thomas Ramshaw Dalby was my great great grandfather. I have an image of Dalby's Hotel, which was later the Royalty, and is now a corner shop supermarket on the High Street. There are memorials in Boston Spa churchyard to Thomas and his decendants.
Originally from the North East, I moved to a children's home in Boston Spa around 1970/1 ish. I had three brothers who moved there with myself and we lived most of our youth there. We used to walk to St. Edwards primary school in Clifford which was about a miles walking distance. A new primary school was built sometime in the mid 70's and we then went to this more modern one which ...see more
