Visitation Convent Bridport

Since my blog of 2007 concerning my time as a boarder at the Visitation Convent school 1942-1947, I have noted with interest that other former pupils (though not from the years I was there) have commented on their experiences of the place. Mostly, their memories are sad and bitter ones. It has made me think back again at my years there.... [more]

The Convent in Bridport

I was disturbed to read the Memory posted in early September from a contemporary about our common primary school, Bridport Visitation Convent. It was reprinted in the Bridport News of October 1st so needs to be balanced I feel. That gentleman clearly doesn't remember his time there with relish but I wonder why he didn't put his schooldays into the context... [more]

Dorset Coast Pocket Album

Once a village in its own right, standing on the slopes above the River Bredy, Bothenhampton has now become a suburb of Bridport. It is best known for the beauty of the architecture of its two churches: the ancient building has been sympathetically restored, and the newer place of worship has four impressive stone arches which rise high above the congregation.

England in the 1880s Photographic Memories

Another of the surrounding parishes into which Bridport borough expanded, Bothenhampton lies to the south-east, with a deep-cut village street which has left a dense cluster of terraces standing on distinctive raised pavements. Eastwards, it becomes Long Lane and climbs into open countryside. Looking westwards along Main Street we can see the lych-gate (at the junction) of the 1889-built Holy Trinity church, replacing a medieval building... [more]
