The House Beautiful

Does anybody remember the big house on the corner of Derby Road, it was at the junction of a main road, the name of which I cannot remember now. We used to call it 'The House Beautiful' whether that was the proper name for it I never knew. This house was where children used to go to for a holiday, my holiday there was arranged by our church at that time (we lived in London), my parents could not afford holidays in those days so mine was arranged by our church. It was a big place large beautiful gardens and all the children were looked after by nurses. At meal times we all went to the big dining room and I remember the Matron there always used to have a parrot sitting alongside her table on a perch, when Matron wanted to keep the children quiet the parrot used to schreech out "QUIET" and everybody became silent to listen to what Matron had to say.
When it was time to go to the beach we all had to line up in twos and walk across the main road and down through a walkway to the top of the cliffs and then down a winding path to the beach. When it was time to go home we were given gifts, on my last visit just before WW2 broke out I was given a pull along railway engine which I could sit in, I had that engine for years afterwards, it was dark green in colour.
I hope somebody can remember 'The House Beautiful" and whatever happened to it, more than likely it became a hotel I suppose, but I shall always remember it as a marvelous place to be.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I too have stayed at House Beautiful, once in 1950 for 3 weeks and in 1953 for 2 weeks. Having came from London it was my first time at Bournemouth and I loved every minute of it. Bournemouth is very special to me and I go regularly for a holidays there. This year (2009) I went to see House Beautiful which is now apartments, and managed to take photos of the building, and memories came flooding back to me.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I was sent to a convalescent children's home aged 4-5 in Bournemouth in either 1957 or 1958 for 6 weeks and was not allowed to have any contact with my parents during this time. They cannot remember where it was and my medical records have seemingly gone missing. I have been trying to find out where the home was, and wonder if it might be "House Beautiful"? Does anyone know if this was the only convalescent home for children in Bournemouth at the time? And was anyone there during the same period?

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I stayed for a month in 1946 at House Beautiful, which was in Derby Road at the corner of Christchurch Road. Whilst recalling little of the house itself (I was 10 years old then) I enjoyed Bournemouth and have liked it ever since, although it is now many years since I was last there.

I had previously seen some of Bournemouth Corporation's famous primrose and maroon Sunbeam trolleybuses operating London Transport's route 691 in the Ilford area of Essex. It took a few days to realise that those travelling along Christchurch Road were going not to Ilford, but to IFORD - a mistake made by a 10-year old! Now, 65 years on......

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I too remember but have always thought it was called The Beautiful House. Like a previous correspondent I was sent there in the early 60's to convalesce, having suffered very bad migraines and a greenstick fracture of the collar bone. I was quite young, probably 6 or 7 and my memories are limited but I do remember the nurses being quite strict, apart from one. I also remember a large wooden rocking horse in one of the rooms, which I desperately wanted to play on but wasn't allowed. We also walked in an orderly line to the beach and I can still see the lizards darting in and out of the stone walling and red squirrels seemed to be everywhere. We were encouraged to hoist our dresses and paddle but it was hard to keep your balance in the ebbing water. Occasionally someone would fall into the water which was met with some disdain from the accompanying nurses, lol. I think I was supposed to stay 3 or 4 weeks but insisted they take me home after 2. It wasn't a bad experience, I just missed home.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I visited the area and can confirm that the House is still there. It is no 11 but is now called BERMUDA COURT there are 19 flats there. It really felt strange and happy at the same time, I took a load of photos of the building and am as sure as I can be that it is the same building. I am sure there was a large garden there. If you look for flats for sale at No 11 you may get a view. or google earth the area/house. I do have pics if anyone wants them. Again very fond memories, thanks for the information that enabled me to revisit HOUSE BEAUTIFUL.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

I have fond memories being there with my sister, must have been when I was about 10 or so. Christmas. There were chickens in the gardens, we took it in turns to get the eggs, the person with most won. Someone got six, I had six but over 2 days so lost. Getting a huge red netting bag full of toys, great. Selling 78 Records for a penny at a sale type of day, We never found out why we were there and never thought to ask. The name has been burned deep in my memory. I am looking at moving to the area in the next year, going down this weekend (May bank holiday) and where have we booked, a hotel in the next street. Spooky. So a visit is well overdue to the site or area.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

Hi, I remember House Beautiful, I'm quite sure that was its official name. I went there for a convalescence in the early 1960s with my elder sister and younger brother. I had been ill with asthma and my GP thought it would be good for me to get out of east London and I could take either my sister or my brother, but wouldn't go unless I could take both. The regime at the house was quite strict and not very pleasant and had to endure it for a month. We slept in dorms and had to rest after lunch and had to go to church every Sunday wearing a shirt and tie and then had a walk on the beach. On one trip to the beach we were stopped by an American tourist who gave all the children sixpence as he felt sorry for us. Not sure what has happened to the house now.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

My memories of The House Beautiful are only good, it was situated on the corner of Derby Road and what I think would have been Christchurch Road but I am not too sure about Christchurch Road, I am only going by present day maps. House Beautiful belonged to the church, the church we used to attend in London arranged my holiday there each year up until 1939, it was taken over by the Sunday Schools organisation in 1969 as offices and was eventually closed down. My memories of House Beautiful can be read in other posts I have written on this site. I have read the previous comment on this subject and I can only think that the place must have changed dramatically as I always enjoyed myself there, the grounds were beautifully kept and visits to the beach were always enjoyable and the Matron and the staff of nurses that were there in those days used to look after us very well. It's a pity I have no photographs to remind me of those days.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

My last visit to 'The House Beautiful' was in 1939, just before the start of the Second World War, I have vivid memories of that place, especially Matron's parrot, it was a great place to be in those years.

RE: RE: The House Beautiful

My sister, brother and me were all sent to House Beautiful for a holiday after illness. I think it was around 1958 but am not sure. My brother stayed with us in the girls' dorm so if you were there at the same tme you would propably remember us. My sister and I were invited back for Christmas the same year. If anyone remember us it would be great to hear from you.
