More about this scene

The spacious Promenade created around 1912 is here shown to advantage. We can see the back of the boat station, with 'cushion huts' peeping out behind the strolling crowds, whilst to the right 'Schneider's gate' is flanked by the bold 'Belsfield Hotel' sign. Over the ensuing years this has become 'The Belsfield', and the attractive street lights have been replaced by utilitarian columns. Despite the apparent sunshine, the amply-clothed women in the foreground are obviously leaving nothing to chance!
