Crossways

A Memory of Bracknell.

Kiddies Corner was great but my favourite treat was a trip to 'The Imp' coffee bar - coloured light panels in the ceiling and an Expresso machine making all the noises !
My mum worked at the Co-op and on Saturdays I would spend a lot of time there - I knew most of the staff and can now safely reveal I think that the jolly Santa in the toy dept ( top floor) was probably the most miserable member of staff during the rest of the year ( according to my mum !)
Saturday lunchtimes were spent in The Spinning Wheel Café at the back of Harmsworths ? toy shop across the Zebra crossing in the High Street - anyone else remember that ?!

I remember the Spinning Wheel. My father, who worked for the GPO, sometimes had his dinner there. I remember being taken in one day to meet the two ladies who ran it. That would be in the 1950s. I don't remember a shop called Harmsworths. There was Youngs which was a shoe shop nearby and Gordon Thakes which was electrical but also sold records. I believe The Imp was originally a Wimpy hence "Imp". That would be in the 1960s.
