Nostalgic memories of Bracknell's local history

Share your own memories of Bracknell and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I can remember the square not only for its shops but also as a meeting place . Most of our games back then involved huge amounts of our friends either playing war games or football matches over on the field opposite the Admiral Cunningham pub. Games like "Run Outs" were played with up to 10 to 15 people, one of you would sit on top of the telephone box in the square and count to100 whilst the others ...see more

Did anyone work at Dresser Ltd in western road. I moved down from london in 1969 and had a house in Great Hollands. I think that we were the only people there at that time. House was enormous, too big for us really. I am in Spain now but still remember those times.
My family moved to Bracknell in 1961 from Lancashire. I can remember some of the shops in Crossway. At the top end by the High Street was a toyshop, next door was a gents clothes shop nearly opposite that was Miller Morris and Brooker a hardware shop and them the coffee bar, the other shops I cant recall. I had a Saturday job at the top end of this picture at a hardware shop Miller Morris and Brooker. Across from them was toy shop and a mens fashion shop. I think next door to MMB was a cafe.
The Old manor had a legend that highwayman Dick Turpin made an escape by taking the cellar tunnel under Church Road to the Hind's Head (the white building). At Sandy Lane Infants School, my friend Andrew Balfour lived in the Old Manor. He showed me the secret tunnel. Its reputation was more interesting than its reality. Ye Old Manor Hotel had a metal scroll-shaped sign, but on the top of ...see more
We moved to Easthampstead in 1962 and moved away in 1968. Bracknell town did have the Crossways but I do remember the rest of the town which was still beautiful and old. When we returned in 1969 I was horrified as an 11 year old to see just how the old town had been torn down. I went to Fox Hills infant and junior schools, we walked there and back unless there was heavy rain when we got the bus. The walk ...see more
Truly a wonderful pub when managed by Gerald and Edith Leader, before they moved to the Blue Lion on Broad Lane.
I moved to Lindenhill Road back in 1954 from South London. I have many fond memories of growing up there and attending Meadowvale Primary School before going to Ranelagh Grammar School. I remember the shops at Priestwood Square, the Admiral Cunningham, the Doctor's office (Faunch and Lask) and the Dentist (Bond).
Was called Station Hotel when I was young. Searle Street, ran between the hotel and shop a short unmade lane. I was born at no 9.
