Student Club And Alessio Coffee Bar

A Memory of Bradford.

It is so nice to read all the memories of Bradford (the good old days). I went to the student club even though I wasn't a student! We would get a stamp on the wrist so we could go out to the Alessio for coffee. I worked as an hairdresser at Fould's in Manchester road and after work at the Majestic in the cloakrooms for extra money to spend. I was able to get free tickets to see the Beatles in 1962 owing to the Gaumont being part of the Rank group. So many happy memories from all those years ago.
I used to go to the Roxy on a Saturday morning and also when an Elvis Presley film was on, it was such fun. I went some Saturdays to John Street open air market to spend my pennies first a serving of mushy peas with vinegar as I walked around then bought a little gift for my Mum.

In searching my family history over the past 10 years I found my GGG Grandfather had a music Hall where the parking of Morrison's is now, and would have been part of the open air market in the 1870's.
I wonder it that's why I was drawn to the market!!

I left England in 1964 and lived in Belgium 10 tears before emigrating to South Africa where I lived 30 years and I am now back living in Cornwall.

I will treasure all these memories forever and how our parents coped and we had happy times with little money and the community spirit in our street was wonderful. There were hard times but I am pleased to be brought up in those times.

as a trad jazz fan I went to the students club. Ed O`Donnell band most sats. Married the bass player!! Visits from acker bilk, mike cotton band and especially George Melly. Big mural on wall one side was I am told done by David Hockney who had been at Bradford art college. Shame the club got filled in and a police station put there. Vaulted ceilings, candles on tables which many used to write their names on the ceiling with the smoke from the burning candle. a very happy environment and never any trouble. christine hill
