Eastwood Road Bramley And my Family
My family have been in Eastwood Road Bramley for almost 100 years and some are still there. I grew up in Eastwood road; most of my family have lived there. My Great Great Grandmother,my Great Grand Mother and my Grandmother and my two great Aunts lived in the house on the corner of the picture (73) and that is my two Great Aunts Hilda and Nelly in the picture with (I think) their friend May. Auntie Hilda lived there untill 2006. The house on the other side of the road (No 48) that you can just see in the picture is where my Mother and her brothers and sisters were born. My Auntie and Uncle live next door still and my father lives round the corner. My two cousins grew up in Eastwood Rd and my sister was born there. I left in 1975 but I have stayed there a few times since. I have many happy memories of the road when I was small there were grass verges on the pavement down the end where we lived and hardly any cars and a lot of people had bicycles. We used to watch the train go by with my Gran. There were two grocer shops in Eastwood Road, Fred Lucas and Charlie Spenders. and a Laundry. A man called Mr Hudson kept a huge lorry at the end by the meadows we used to get told off for climbing on it.Things were quiet then; people often used the road for a short cut going through the meadows to the common walking, or on their bicycles. I can remember the girls from Gosden house all going past in twos in their school uniforms.
It has changed over the years and now its lined with cars but it is still a special place to me.

My father Arthur Head and his sister Olive were born and grew up in Eastwood Road . They left and moved to Exeter in 1925 just after they had left school. Grandad had lost his job in the tan yard due to the depression. Both my grandfather James and his father William worked in the tan yard. William was an accomplished artist and painted local views in oils. One of the paintings I have is of Wonersh Hollow and a few years ago one of the Wonersh Club was hanging on their wall. I also have a clock with an inscription that it was presented to James Head in recognition of his services as Treasurer of the Wonersh and Bramley Liberal Club (as it was then known) 1909-1925. My aunt Olive is now 98 years old and living in Cornwall. A few years ago she was visited by an old school friend May Clue who lived opposite Arreton.
