brassington in 1800

I am interested in your scottish/brassington connection. Mygt gt gt gt grandfather is supposed to related to Rob Roy MacGregor and indeed our tartan was the MacGregor tartan. I know he was born according to the census in 1841 in Brassington in 1796 but cannot find any records of his birth in the parish records although the person in charge of the parish records said that he had heard a rumour that there once was a person related to Rob Roy who lived in Brassington. Can anyone throw any light on this. His name was Thomas Bonser White. my email is jackiegear@hotmail.com

RE: brassington in 1800

Hi Jackie

I've emailed you the following but leaving it here also just in case. I'm interested in this area of Derbyshire so I thought I'd have a look to see what I could find for you.

There is only ONE Thomas White born about 1796 in the 1841 census (on ancestry.com in their index) so I clicked on him but it wasn't showing he was living in Brassington but Brimmington which is in Chesterfield - is this the Thomas White you are talking about? The handwriting does look like Brassington I must admit but Brassington didn't come under Chesterfield in 1841.

You also said that it shows he was BORN in Brassington but the 1841 census does NOT show places of birth, only if they were born in the county they were living in. So even if he was living in Brassington (which we now know is actually Brimmington) that doesn't necessarily mean he was born there.

I just hope I'm talking about the same Thomas you were :) .

It looks like Thomas was living with his mother Mary White aged 75 and perhaps a sister named Susanna aged 30 although Susanna could be his wife.

On the IGI there is a baptism for a Thomas White on 25 Oct 1795 at Chesterfield, mother Mary father John.

In the 1851 census there is a Thomas White unmarried aged 55 born Brimington living in Brimington. I see now that Susannah was his sister because she is still with him along with her husband William Nuttall, 4 children and a servant.

I won't go any further until I hear from you that he's the right one, if not it's back to the drawing board.
