Family Memories
This was the year I represented my family at my Uncle Davy Mcarthy's funeral, what a truly momentous occasion, people travelled for miles to be there. He was a bastion for the cause and was as a young man on hunger strike at Walton jail in Liverpool, fighting for his party!! He lived in James Vonnally Square with his wife Sarah and my cousin. I can remember scrambling at his graveside trying to retrieve a spent cartridge from the bullets fired over his grave as a souvenir. My Auntie Marjorie, God rest her soul, my mother's twin sister, was also hastily scooping up the spent shells. Her twin sister my mother had sadly died months earlier at the untimely age of 40 years. His Name Was Desmond Byrne
His name was Desmonfd Byrne and he used to live in Bray in the 1970s, working at the GPO (Dublin). I do hope that someone will read this, and understand my very unperfect English: I'm from Brittany and am looking for this lost friend Desmond Byrne, and don't even know if he is still alive. We were friends with Anthony Butler, from Dublin. I hope someone will help me give this 'memory' a 'happy end'. Can you help? If so, thank you so much. My email is leondubas@yahoo.fr.
My Roots in Co. Wicklow
18th July 1959 my honeymoon was spent in Bray, County Wicklow. We stayed with Mrs Madge McGrath, a cousin of my father (Joseph Devlin). My strongest memory is the friendliness of the people, and my husband enjoyed the Guinness.

I spent my honeymoon in Bray and also stayed with a Mrs McGrath who was related to my father (Joseph Devlin). Do you have any photos of the family or the house or address as I will be visiting Bray this year tracing my roots. The name Curtis is also a connection. Can anyone help in any way at all? Thanks. ihad a wonderful holiday with my friend john morrison from cambuslang,we stayed with a mrs mcgrath.i came from hamilton and we sailed from glasgow to dublin and then by bus to bray.we met a young hairdresserin bray JUNE ONEILL,and she kept me on the right road for my 2 weeks holiday.
Memories of Eire
Now O'Connell Street
The street was officially renamed O'Connell Street in 1924 after Daniel O'Connell as Ireland moved forward as a free state! Nelsons Pilar seen in the distance (middle) was destroyed in the early morning on the 8th of March 1966 by unknown persons (yet many have claimed to have done it). It has now been replaced by a strange "Giant Pin" or "Spike" that's 120m high (3m wide at bottom & 10cm wide at top). A now popular place for meeting as was "Under the Clock at Clearys" or at the General Post Office (GPO). No clear evidence to date tells whether the Dubliners (Dubs) have accepted this Spike structure yet!!
Now The Top Pedestrianised Shopping Street in Ireland!
This is now famously the most exclusive shopping street in Dublin & Ireland too. The 7th most expensive rental prices in Europe with some retail outlets actually beating the world records making them more expensive than Paris or New York! This is the most popular place for Buskers from all over the world to display or perform their acts.
Grandpa Was on Board.
My grandfather George Edwin Webber served on this ship between 1st November 1895 and September 9th 1897. He may have actually been on board as this photo was taken. He was also on the HMS 'Belleisle' which was stationed in Kingstown from June 11th 1888 to 8th of March 1892. He married a girl named Margaret (born 1872) from Meath. Rose was born in Meath in 1896. Lilly, George and James arrived in the three years from 1898, but they were born in Lincolnshire. I have not yet found Margaret's maiden name.
Childhood Holidays
Happy memories of family holidays to Ireland with my parents, brother, grandmother and aunt. We visited all over Killarney whilst staying at the Strand Hotel, Youghal, Co. Cork. Wonderful times and a great childhood.
My Grandmother,Maggie's Memory of Ireland
My grandmother Maggie was born in County Kerry around 1875. Her future husband, Thomas Flood in his love letters to her referred to her affectiinately as "The Shoemaker's Daughter". He reminded her of one memory she must have told him about trying to push her older sister Abby into a well! She spoke to him fondly of her "balmy days spent by the Killarney Lakes" and the Brickeen Bridge. My sister and I hope to visit the Lakes
Of Killarney in her memory someday.
