Outside the row of terraced cottages at Breachwood Green near Hitchin stands a pristine Ford 100E model. In front of one of these houses stood the community's well. This was cemented over in the 1950s. It was 175 feet deep, and was notorious for breaking its rope and losing the bucket. This had to be fished out using a hooked heavy iron 'strudgel', which was lowered on a strong cable and scraped around the bottom until it caught on the handle of the bucket so that it could be brought to the surface.

Cottages In Lower Road
My dad used to live in the end cottage up until the early 1950s (the one next to the car). Both my grandparents lived there until about 1965. The cottage was very small, with no running water and an old earth closet toilet. The water had to be collected in pails from standpipes every day. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
