I was born and bred in Brentford and can remember it well from the 1970's onwards. Both of my grandparents and their families were also old Brentonians all of their lives. I have many stories from my nan and grandad of the times before I was born and have heard many of the names mentioned in other posts.

My mom was born in Brentford and lived at 31 Pottery Road. She met my father during the war and moved with him to the West Midlands. My mom's name was Miriam Thomas. My grandparents lived at No.29 Distillery Road; their names were Thomas and Amy Passey but known as Tama and Cath. My dad, James (Jim), and his sister Lilian (Lily) lived there as well and I have fond memories of going there as a child. I was born on the Clayponds estate, i fact my sister slill lives in that area. I went to Lionel Road School, later I attended Chiswick Grammer. I roamed all the old areas around Brentford; the Queens Hall was a regular haunt twice a week, Brentford Football Club when playing. All the activities and events mentioned in these memories, I have also been involved in. Going to St. Georges school, teachers being Mr Church and Mr Allen, being at school when the King died. Going to the Odeon at Northfields on Saturday morning, seeing Tarzan, Superman, Nyaka the jungle girl (I think that it the way to spell it) and loads of cartoons. Hi Ann..amazing how the memories of those years remain with us after so many years. Like you I went to St Georges School. I was there till 1952 and remember taking my 11 Plus Exam on the day the King died. Exam was in the morning and Mum took me to the Queens in the afternoon but because of King's death the cinema didn't open. I remember so much of my childhood in Brentford, mostly from the early 50s to mid-60s. Alfie Winkworth mentions the Pottery Arms pub where the landlords were sisters Wyn and Cissie and the Harry Matheson he mentions was actually married to one of the sisters. During the 40's and 50's my life revolved around Bedford Road and surrounding area..roads like; Harnage Rd, George Rd, Pottery Rd, North Rd, Distillery Rd ,Netley Rd and Greet Rd. All these are sadly gone along with the Gas Works where on Saturday mornings I used to take a pram to get sacks of coke before going to the Morning Pictures at the ABC Forum at Ealing.
