Lost Places of Bristol
Can anyone help me with some 'lost places' in Bristol?
I'm trying to locate where Navarino Place was...and also St-Augustine-the-Less church.
My Gtx3 grandfather died at no.6 Navarino Place in 1857 and many members of my family were christened/married at the above church. I'm trying to piece together their lives and what it would have been like for them working in Bristol at that time.

Hi Kate Spurrier
I think I may be able to help you. Navarino Place, I believe, was situated on Newfoundland Road in central Bristol around number 127, it is now part of the M32 into Bristol.
St Augustine the Less was situtated at the junction of College Green and Anchor Road, was bombed during WW2 and finally demolished in the 1962. If you refer to Wikipedia, search the name and follow links, you will have some very good photographs of the church.

I too searced for St Augustine The Less, with relatives christened and married there. I visited Bristol in the summer and yes, Viv is correct, it was on College Green, right next to the Abbey.
Bristol Tourist Information told me it had been extensively bomb damaged during the war and was indeed pulled down. The Marriot Hotel now stands in its place.
I have struggled, however, to find photographs of it, even at Bristol's museum, but have followed Viv's advice and through the links have found pictures at last.
Cant thank you enough Viv - hope that it helps Kate too

This pub was next door to your GGG grandfathers house, on Newfoundland Road, now parallel to the M32 where it comes into the city!

Thank you so much for all this information and photo - it has been really helpful. Yes, I have now located Navarino Place on an old map and it confirms what you are telling me.

I would love to know if anyone remembers the 'Carlton Club' in Old Market, and if there are any photos of it. Thank you.

Hi
I've been trying to find photographs of Drivers/ Drovers Field in the same area of Newfoundland in Bristol, my ancestors all lived in this area but I have no idea what it was like! They lived there from 1841 to 1865!
I would really apreciate any help!
Many thanks

127 Newfoundland Road, Bristol is the address given on my great grandfather's death certificate as the place where he died. I am currently trying to piece together his life and would welcome any info - especially a photograph of the house.

Navario Place still exists in 2012. It is the rank of 7 roofs right next door to the Texaco petrol station at the very start of the M32. It is where Dove Lane runs down to Newfoundland Road, alongside the A4032. It can be found on the excellent website http://maps.bristol.gov.uk/knowyourplace/?maptype=js which overlays all the old maps of Bristol with the modern OS map.
