Holy Cross Convalescent Home

A Memory of Broadstairs

although not of the catholic faith, I was sent there to recuperate from asthma , and spent some time there, 1956- 58. I remember happy times as well as sad and lonely times, especially being far from home, and often having the feelings of not totally understanding why I was actually there, but on the whole I thing I must have enjoyed it , lots of time on the beach, as we were only a few hundred yards or so from it,that is where I aquired my first fishing rod, 7/6d as I recall, I can still picture many of the faces of my fellow inmates, John O'brien alias " Prof " and Nick Hornby, a couple of names that now and then pop up as memories, also a couple of the of the nuns, Sister Mary Eugene, and Sister Mary Valentine, by the way my name is : Kenneth Marchant,
and if anybody remembers me, please get in touch, I would love to hear from you...

I was sent to the holy cross convent in the mid 50s.
i also remember Sister Mary Eugene, and Sister Mary Valentine, also
John O'Brien ,
i was only sent there because my mother was a devout catholic and she had health problems and she could not cope with my younger brothers rebellious ways so i had to go as well..
i had some good and bad memories, i enjoyed gardening as i had a little plot of my own. remember flying a big box kite i think it was some sort of kite left over from the war as it was bright yellow, i remember we used to play bulldog in a big hall,
also i remember one of the nuns was a bit sadistic as a few of us kids where laughing about something i don't remember what but i remember being made to kneel in front of a big steel radiator and i was still giggling and this particular nun hit the back of my head and bashed my forehead into the rad ,,i had a lump on the front of my head the size of a golf ball.. but i still had to remain kneeling for what was ages. i used to remember for supper we had hot chocolate and bread and butter ,,also i remember the long dormitory we slept in and the nun had a little room at the end,
By the way my name is James (Jim) Smith, my brothers name is David
some of my other memories are,,
we found a dead shark on the beach another time the beach was covered with jellyfish .
i remember the railway track ran along the back where our little gardens were i remember the tennis court and learning to play tennis,.
hope someone remembers and reply's with other memories..?
