Port Regis Convent

I was sent to Port Regis Convent between 1963 and 1967, I had bad asthma and the sea air was thought to be good for my health. I have good and and bad memories. One nun I remember being cruel was Sister Peter Anthony but the lovely ones were Sister Patrick Mary who I think was from Dublin, Sisterr Veronica and Sister Ursula, I think she was from Germany, they were really kind. I had a good friend called Geraldine Lee, I think she was from Manchester, and Cecilia Lennon who was from Newry. My surname was McGaffin then.

RE: RE: Port Regis Convent

Most of my memories of Port Regis are good ones, the bad ones I do not dwell on. In 1993 I went back to Port Regis with my wife Maria and met with Sister Peter Anthony, she was still there and she got a big shock when she saw me, I do not think I will ever return to England again, and it was good to see the old school one last time.

RE: RE: Port Regis Convent

I do not know if the convent is still there but I went there in 1950 and 1952, some good memories, some bad. I was not abused, but some were, especially if you did not toe the line, retribution was swift, and sometimes exceeded the crime, not for me, but I did see others. I was 8 and 10 at the time, my name was Sandra Mills, two other girls accompanied me on the train with a gentleman who took us there, one was called Drew and the other a tall girl, called Boyce, surnames. One sister, who was Sister Mary Magdalene, and a little sister in the kitchen were both kind, the others were cold but not abusive to me, of course this would not be tolerated now, but at the time when you are that young, you just put up with whatever came your way. I think about it often and sometimes I wonder if I imagined it all, but hearing about it after all this time I realise, I have not spoken about it too much to anyone, so it is good to talk about it, and many memories come flooding back. There were some happy times there, especially going down to the beach. My name at the time was Sandra Mills. I would be pleased to hear from you if you wished. Best regards, Sandra Popple.
