More about this scene

With a shortage of burial places in the capital, the London Necropolis Company bought 2,000 acres of heathland at Brookwood and laid out one-fifth of it as a cemetery. From 1854 onwards, the 'great and the good' and ordinary mortals too were laid to rest there. The growth of the village followed later. The Connaught Cafe, seen here on the left, is now a private house, but the post office next door remains.

A Selection of Memories from Brookwood

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Brookwood

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

In this photo, there is a cafe in the background. This house used to be the lock-keeper's cottage, owned by my great-grandparents. My mother used to play on a derelict barge opposite the house on the canal. Are there any Webbs still in Brookwood that remember Ted and Gert Webb, my grandparents?
