Glebe Farm Brough
Situation of Farm: Glebe Farm was situated in the centre of Brough approached along a track off the Fosse Way. About 800mt away was the very busy war time Winthorpe aerodrome. My association with the farm was through a family relationship; Mr and Mrs L E Stephenson, uncle and aunt, together with their son. They were tenants of the property, owned I believe, by The Church of England. I regularly visited during my school holidays. The House as I Remember it 1940-1954: This was a house of unknown early history. It was obvious from its form that it had been extensively added to over the years. Viewed from different aspects it looked quaint and elegant whilst other views looked utility. It was built of brick, with some natural stone, but in the late 1940's was cement rendered, a practice now known to harm the wall fabric. Inside the house were a beamed dining room and two lounges. My Aunt From Brough Farm
I did not mention in my post on Brough Farm that Mrs. Stephenson, mentioned in the opening paragraph, is in her 103rd year and resides in a nursing home in the SW of England.
Memories of Nottinghamshire
Family History
My Great Grandparents Albert Wells and Edith Ann Judson married in this church on 24th December 1912. Edith was born Judson and was born at Holme and so may have been Baptised in this church as well.
Coddington Camp
I lived at the RAF camp at Coddington back in the late 60s early 70s. Does anyone else remember the fun we used to have at the Club discos. Or hanging around in the woods at the back, there was an old disused tennis court, but we managed to have some fun playing there in the long, long summers. The local villagers were so friendly too - I made good friends that I am still in touch with now. I went back to the Camp a couple of years ago - it is now a "posh" housing development.
My Grandad
The funeral of my grandad, Joseph Cobb, was the last one to take place at St Leonard's Church before it was demolished.
Great Grandad's Shop,
Ernest C Rick was my Great Grandmother's first husband. He owned this Gents Outfitters shop in Stodman Street, now it is Bakers Oven. I don't really have any information about him, only that he married Florence and had 2 sons. If anyone knows any more, please feel free to leave comments.
Newark Market
I lived at the RAF camp at Coddington during my teens. I went to Sconce Hills school & later worked at Alec W. Adams in Lombard Street. In those days, as office workers we were required to work on Saturday mornings and afterwards, my friend & I would invariably walk round the marketplace before catching the bus home. If we missed the bus, they were few & far between in those days & many is the times we had to walk up Beacon Hill in all weathers! One of my brothers was born in Coddington & indeed, I was Christened at Coddington Church! (better late than never!) I love Newark still & although I don't get the chance to go back for a visit very often now, I often think of the lovely times & good friends I made there.
