Clwyd memories

The Swimming Pool Pre Lido Days.

Swimming Baths c1930

Seeing this photo of the Swimming Pool brings back so many memories. It was where I took my Life Saving Certificate, and where we spent day after day with our friends and family. The day we moved to Prestatyn in the building behind, which I think was then called The Pavillion (not sure about that) the 6--5 Special was being televised on BBC. I went to have a look and to my great surprise, somebody opened one of those windows shown in the photo and let me in. That was a wonderful experience, never forgotten. I have so many precious memories of Prestatyn, very nostalgic after seeing all these wonderful photos. The History of Prestatyn also has some good pics on Facebook. We lived in Third Ave off Beach Road West at the end of the road by The Lido. My maiden name was Kathryn Sharpe.

Ffrith Beach

My first memories of the Ffrith beach are of my grandfather who started the fun fair, which had an arcade, bingo and fair ground. There was also two boating ponds, cafe, ice cream kiosks etc. Many good days were spent on the beach, it's a shame that the Ffrith is no longer a family-oriented place to be. Back in my grandfathers day the Ffrith was packed with holiday makers and day tripers, what happened?
Later on in the 70s there was a gokart track added, I can't remember who had the gokarts.
That's all for now - hope it's triggered some memories of the Ffrith as it was.

Same as

I can remember it as the same ,what a wonderful place when I was a child.

Childhood Memories

We moved to Prestatyn in 1960 when I was 3. My first memory was riding on my dad's shoulders walking up the High Street and seeing a bus with no roof! We lived in Linden Walk for three years and I used to enjoy milkshakes in a cafe on the High Street. Several years later my Gran bought the same house, so my holidays as a ten year old were spent in the same house! I remember walking up the mountain with my Mum to a gate at the top, which is still there. It's near the layby with the viewpoint. We used to walk over to Gwyensgor for ice creams and feed the ducks in the pond on the way.
In the mid 1980's we used to visit my Gran who then lived on Warren Drive.
I still enjoy going back there. Even though it's changed a lot it still brings back memories of my childhood.

Happy Holidays

Staying with granny, Norton Avenue, running free all day with my brothers, the school my brother went to, now an Indian restaurant. Skelton and Dowell Butchers, St John's Methodist church, twice on a Sunday.  The building of the promenade, hating it, the loss of the sand dunes.  The high street with a farm in it, now Boots etc.  Just the freedom to run all the day, my brothers played with the headmaster's sons, so couldn't get up to real mischief.  The Denbighshire and Flint Show each year. Such a happy childhood, holidays every summer for many years.

Mobo Horses

We moved to Prestatyn in 1948. I loved the Mobo horses that the little ones could ride at the Bastion Road beach. My little school was Pendre, up the hill Fforddlas I think. Also going to St Chad's School annual fair and sale. Always bargains for mum to buy. Robert's butchers (and Welsh lamb!) and Tony's cycle shop. I thought he was Italian, not Dutch! Bear Brand stockings for Mum at the lady's outfitter (the cardboard bear who walked kept me amused while she shopped). The Pearl shop, open all hours it seemed (known as the Jew shop, but I have no idea why). Carnival, and being the fourth lady in waiting (they couldn't really leave me out!). Trains to Chester and Liverpool (the 6.00 a.m. workman's for a cheap fare). Steam trains, so exciting - I hated the diesels when they arrived. I remember one Sunday walking alone, aged 12, from a friend's house looking up the high street and seeing no one at all! I fancied World War... Read more

The Lido

Oh the Lido, life was so free, we had the basket room, swimming club nights and the Gala at the end of the summer. Cecil, Waff, they don't make people like that now. We stayed out all day, we must have looked like prunes by September. Then the Ffrith, we had a chalet every summer in response to above the go carts were owned by the Liddles my brother worked there. Put it back the way it was, at least families could enjoy it. Remember the motor boats the went round at the lido beach?
