Woodfield House

A Memory of Brynygwenin.

My childhood memories are locked in Brynygwenin. I lived at Woodfield House this was a semi detached house. We shared a pump where we drew our water. This was, indeed, a luxury not having too far to collect drinking water. I was born in1944 and spent my childhood here until 1955. I was, because of circumstances, forced to leave the village because of my Mum's ill health. Even so my best memories remain here.
I went to Llantillio Pertholey school until passing my 11 plus exam in 1955 which was when my Mother was taken ill.
I remember my childhood friends - Margaret and Elaine Davies, who lived at the end of the village. The Turners - I remember one of them went to Grammar School before me. The Hext's? Ann was my school friend but later years I managed to keep in touch with Tess and Micky and their Mum and Dad Rosie and Harold. Next there were the Brown's family, Colin Graham and Michael and then Cheryl. Vague then until my friend Wendy Slattery and her Mum and Dad and gran and grandad. The New houses. Mrs Evans - The shop, Mrs Green and her dog Monty and Gladys Jones. Across the road the bungalow - Mr and Mrs Philips and their baby Stephen, who I had the privilege to look after on occasions- I felt so grown up pushing him around in his pram. My house was next down the village. Next door were the Bishop's Alfie and Edna - I remember Alfie's Mum and Dad. Down the road was Bertie - can't remember much except I was a bit scared. Muddy's farm was where I had tO ask for milk if we ran short . I did not like going there, the farm smells and the smell of sour milk. Next was my friend Valerie Wall, we loved to play with dolls, her gran lived next door. Then there was another friend Brenda Davies - she went to Convent - I thought this was posh and was pleased when I passed the 11 plus to think I would travel on the bus to school with her. My SundaySchool teacher Miss Davies lived down from here where we went to the Methodist Chapel every Sunday. Mrs Wall lived across the road next door to the Chapel and then Jake.? And at the end in the bungalow was Lewis Evans and his wife who were married in the 1950's.
These are my memories of the people of Brynygwenin but childhood memories stay forever.
