Childhood Home

My grandfather, John James Lewis, was Station Master at Builth Road station and lived at Station Villa, (the first house in Railway Terrace). I was born at Station Villa myself, and lived there with my mother and sister, Helen, until the age of 16. My Uncle Ernie Lewis also lived at Station Villa and was a signalman at Builth Road High Level station during the years I lived there. I used to love visiting Uncle Ernie in the signal box and watching him at work and seeing the trains go by. My Aunt, Evelyn Lewis, also lived at Station Villa and was a school teacher at the Infant's School in Newbridge-on-Wye. My Aunt Doris Edwards and her daughter, Margaret, also lived at Station Villa. I have very happy memories of my childhood at Builth Road and of having the freedom to explore the wonderful surrounding countryside. There was a very close knit community at Builth Road, and I always felt safe when I was out playing in the fields or by the brook. My favourite place was the Pink Bridge over the brook near "Bottom Row".

RE: RE: Childhood Home

I was very interested to read your memories of Builth Road and Station Villa. My husband and I have just moved to Builth Road and into Station Villa (in May of this year). We loved this house as soon as we saw it and I have been eager to find out about its history.

I was wondering if you had any photos of what it looked like when you were growing up (inside or out?)? I would love to see what has changed/stayed the same. We have taken a number of photos since moving in and I would be happy to share them if you were interested.

Thank you once again for sharing your memories and I hope to hear from you soon.

RE: RE: Childhood Home

Hi Catherine !

I've only just seen your reply to my comments on this website (A YEAR LATE !) and apologise for not getting in touch before!
I rarely visit this website as I only found it originally in connection with the Wyeside Art Centre possible closure.

I recently heard from my cousin Margaret, that she saw your comments to me on here and has been in touch with you herself, since she thought I hadn't replied.

I'd be happy to give you further info on St. Villa and show you all the photos I've got from when I lived in the house, and also those I have inherited from my late mother who also grew up at St. Villa.

Hope you can contact me by email as it would be easier than me checking this site. I tried using the contact link to your name but it wouldn't work.

Look forward to hearing from you. Best Wishes, Jennifer
