Walking 3 Miles to School

My mum Barbara Wiltshire [nee Pritchard] was brouhgt up here with her 11 brothers and sisters. She is always reminding us that she had to walk 3 miles to school and one of her brothers used to bunk off and hide in the woods until it was time to come home, sadly she has dementia now, which took hold of many of her brothers and sisters also, but she still vaguely remembers when she sees the name and photos of Burley. It's so sad to see her memory gradually fading though, if anyone has any photos we would be grateful.

RE: RE: Walking 3 Miles to School

My grandfather and his family were bought up in Burley, his name was Edward Bush. My father was Patrick Bush and there were also Robin, Betty, Peggy and Shirley, they have all passed away now apart from Betty. I have great memories of living in Burley in the 1950s and 1960s. My name is James Bush, Edward's oldest grandson. If anyone remembers my family I will be glad to hear from them and would like you to tell me your story.
Tthanks,
James

RE: RE: Walking 3 Miles to School

I moved away from Burley in 1946 so my memories of the Pritchards are of school days in Burley School. I am amazed to hear that there were 12 brothers and sisters, I can only remember 3 - Audrey, who was in the infant class when I was, Violet, who was in my sister's class, and Barbara, who was a year or so older. I imagine she was in the same year as Diane Goddard who still lives in Burley and with whom I still correspond (spasmodically). I believe they lived at Burley Lodge which is 2 to 3 miles from the school and Church Cottage where I lived until 1946. I seem to remember Violet and Audrey had reddish hair and Barbara was dark. As I moved up through the school I have no memory of them so wonder if they moved from Burley Lodge maybe at the outbreak of war 1939. Very little information I'm afraid, I hope you are luckier with others. I wish your mother well.
