Memories Of A Bevan Boy

A Memory of Burnhope.

My late father, Eric Palmer, was stationed at Burn Hope colliery during the second World War, where he worked as a 'Bevan Boy'. He had many memories of his time there which he often shared with my sister and I. He was very fortunate to be billeted with a lovely family, The Ladlers, who treated him as they did their son George. Dad was not over keen on the mining but thoroughly enjoyed playing football for the local team. My sister still has the small piece of coal he gave to my mother which was used for 'First Footing'. I was able to get Dad's service medal, posthoumously. It is something I treasure and will eventually be passed on to my elder grandson.

Was the family Laidler my maiden name was Laidler and my grandparents lived in Holmside but I lived in Burnhope and then moved to Australia with my parents. Just seemed coincidental that the name is similar. Christine
It was indeed Laidler I misplelt it in my original message. George married Betty and they eventually moved to Coventry.
Dad who was from Reading kept in touch with George until 2003.
Hi Jane, I was thrilled to read your comment I am keen to trace my family tree. Have lived in Australia since I was a small child. George is my Uncle and my Dad left home and was in the army and was a rat of tabrook in World War Two he was the Eldest in his family. I live in Perth and my email address is jackchrism@bigpond.com if you would like to contact me. I remember my Grandfather as being a gentle man.
Hi Jane. My mother was a Laidler, the youngest of the 7 children, Josephine. She died recently but had many stories to tell about the Bevan boy! We scattered her ashes in Burnhope as it was always her spiritual home. George died a little while ago but Betty is still fit and well.
