Between the 14th and early 19th centuries, Bursledon was an important centre for naval shipbuilding, with the wooded slopes of the River Hamble providing much of the timber. HMS 'Elephant', Nelson's 74-gun flagship at the Battle of Copenhagen, was built here by George Parsons and launched at his yard in 1786.

With reference to the Polish Motor Torpedo Boat houseboat in the photo ('Hippocampus/S-8/HMTB 427'), I have done some more research using the local Electoral Registers (held in Winchester and Gosport) and found out the following: The first owner of S-8 in June 1949, was Mr. Alan Aitcheson who bought the boat from the Admiralty after WW2 and the boat was in fact simply called, ...see more
In the photo are several houseboats and yachts moored up to the bank on the LHS of the picture, which was 'Deacon's Boat Yard' (no relation to me!). I lived on the large white motor torpedo boat (when she was moved from the River Hamble to the River Itchen, Southampton).
