Waterloo Road

A Memory of Burslem.

I was born in Burslem and lived on Waterloo Road across from Macintyres pottery from 1949 until 1957 when we moved to Lancashire. Macintyres had a clock tower and we would check it in the morning before leaving for school. I began school at St. John's and then went to North Road C P. I remember Wilshaw's grocers and the queue outside the oatcake shop on Sunday mornings. I still dream of the smell of fresh oatcakes, unheard of in Lancashire. I also remember the church walks and the annual wakes on the grange. All the children from Waterloo Road, Commercial Street and Barnfield Road played together, the older ones looking out for the younger children until our mums called us in for tea. Some of my ancestors are buried in Burslem Cemetery. We weren't well off but they were happy times, and although I've lived in many places during my life I still feel my roots are in Burslem.

Hi Susan,
Not sure if this link will work to my one drive for the video, but you can give it a go.

I don’t recognize the names of you brothers, but it was a long time ago. My brother John would have been closer to your age Susan, being born about 1947, but I am
not sure which schools he went to. I have never been on face book unfortunately. Mavis was in the early days but gave it away a few years back.
I have been watching the TV program Potters Slap Down in Middleport and have been absolutely loving it.
Regards
Alan
