My 3rd Great Grandfather

The Windmill c1965

The 1841 Census says that my 3rd great grandfather, William Little, with wife Ann and family, lived at this Windmill. His occupation is stated as 'Miller' so I guess he worked on the premises. One of his sons, George, grew to marry Mary Ann and run the Barley Mow Beer House on Chapel Hill. His daughter Mary Ann was a barmaid there at age 19 and at George's death his wife took over the running of the premises. It passed into the hands of other family members later.

Stansted Airport in The Late 60's

I remember as a lad cycling from Bishop's Stortford to the old Stansted airport. In those days there were just a few buildings with a very small terminal building. You used to be able to approach the airport via a lane and there was nothing more than a set of lights at the end of the runway to stop you crossing when planes were taking off or landing. Naturally as boys, we crossed so we could be under the planes to be adventurous. In the terminal building you could get a few stickers for destinations such as Barcelona, we stuck these on our bikes with pride and would call back most weeks for new supplies. I remember one airline that operated there "Channel Airways" and a man there named Claud. If asked nicely, he would show you onboard a plane that was in the hangar.

RAF Stansted

I was stationed at RAF Stansted (263 MU) Oct,1946 to Feb,1947. We had between 100 to 200 RAF blokes and about the same figure for German POW's. The station was a storage depot and was closed for air traffic. I am looking for old photos or drawings etc. Ron Taylor

Visits to my Grandfathers @fullers End

Every year in our school holidays we would stay at my aunt's house at Sawbridgeworth and all my family would meet at my grandfather's house at Fullers End, Elsenham for a day. Me and my brother, Thomas, would be given the job to get the drinking water in a pail. He had no water or a well - we would have to go down to the railway crossing, go across, in the bank the other side of the crossing was a land drain sticking out and clear fresh water running out and we would fill the pail and take it back. We also played cricket on the field just down the road and used the electric light post as stumps. My grandfather didn't like you using the wrong words - I said to him "where is my dad" he said "he is not your dad he is your father".

The Clock House

My Nan and Grandad lived in the Clock House for a long time, from birth I spent many happy christmas's here with my big family. This house is my most favourite place in England, I love absolutely everything about it and only wish anyone reading this could get a glimpse of my wonderful memories. I was told I was conceived here.
500 years old+, it's quite hard for me to grasp just how old that is.
The best things about this house... how 'lived in' it felt, the noise of the cars and the ages going past through the little lead windows.. waiting for Father Christmas I was convinced he'd never miss the Clock House... It has fireplaces in nearly every room! The old doors....
The Clock Room is in the room above the drive, the Clock workings are very old which gives the room a very eerie feeling. My nan is very elegant and old fashioned so the interior suited very well...My grandfather was an Antique Dealer so the... Read more

Clock House

I am looking for any relative of my Uncle George Sampford. I remember being with him in the Clock House in the early 1940s. I do not know if he lived there or if we were visiting someone else. I remember an air rifle being accidently fired in the front room and the pellet got lodged in the wall.  I would appreciate any info. George had 3 brothers - Harry who was killed in the First World War, Hugh who was born deaf and dumb, and William who was my father.

Hassobury School, Farnham

St Mary The Virgin Church 1899

I used to go to a boarding school in Farnham, it was Hassobury, a big mansion,
it was in Hazel End.  Across the fields from there we used to go to a church for holy communion before breakfast, I am not sure if it was St Mary's.
