A Focal Point
Kay Gardens was the terminus for all bus services from surrounding districts and towns. On this photograph, the large building at the back of the picture was the Co-op, which was at that time a department store, but also housed a restaurant on the first floor, widely used by office workers at lunch times, and of course for funeral parties. At the far right of the picture is the dome for the old indoor market. Kay Gardens was a popular place for local workers to sit at lunchtime to eat packed lunches.

RE: RE: A Focal Point
Kay Garden was very much a focal point of my time in Bury. Our family moved from Bury in 1955, but before that my Dad had worked at the
Co-op, and I had gone to school just down the road at St. Marie's.
I would pass Kay Garden to and from school and passed through at dinner time to and from the family's small restaurant down by the Irwell. The outdoor stalls for black pudding and roast potatoes are etched in my mind, as is the tripe shop which was located in the same row from where the photo was taken.
These photographs help rekindle the fond memories I have of Bury.
Thanks for posting them.

RE: RE: A Focal Point
I remember Kay Gardens very well, my mum and her sisters were clippys on the buses, the Povey sisters, mum used to take me up to the bus canteen. We lived in Heywood with my gran and grandad, we moved to Bury in 1958, Lord Street, it was near the Scala picture house. I went to Bury Ragged School, then to Holy Trinity School.
