RE: RE: My Maternal Grandfather Was A Waiter Here
I travel to Buxton often and am fasinated by this sad unloved building. I have tried to find out the history of this building but to no avail, is there anyone out there who could point me in the right direction? It must have been a spectacular building in its time, how was it allowed to get in this derelict state?

I was delighted to read this. As a child especially at Christmas I would sit outside on that low wall with a group of Bennett Street children and watch the Christmas festivities, what seemed to me to be high society balls. I seem to remember a chandelier, an orchestra and people dancing in the most elegant of evening dress. We of a poorer background were so in awe. Thank you for the photo.
In 1986 I was there attending my Mother's funeral and the Hydro was where we had refreshments afterwards. Even then it had lost it's elegance I thought. I too felt very sad. I visited England again as recent as 2008 so I saw it looking derelict and it is a terrible shame.
Frances Frith's beautiful photograpy has contributed so much to history.
