We used to live at 96, Church Road where I lived as a youngster between 1956 and circa 1962 when our family moved to a new house in New Haw. I was 11 years old when we moved there from Rodborough Hill near Milford. Stoops Bridge ! Ah! what fun we had here. My dad bought us canoes - we used an old pram chassis to haul the canoe up "Conquer Lane or Arch" or carried it out the back of Winern Glebe, thro the Allotments and into the field seen, just the other side of the bridge. Many hours were spent fishing here, catching "live bait" of Tench; Gudgeon for dad and earning Thruppence for each fish - later with inflation 6d or a Tanner! I ...see more
I can remember when I was in my teens, myself and a group of friends would hire the boats from the boat house and row all afternoon on Sundays, we had loads of fun up and down the canal, seems like another life time now, 40 year's or so have gone by, the old canal has seen some changes, there was no M25 then, life was much quieter.
