Tyne and Wear memories

Growing up in Kielder

Living in Kielder from a child to a man ... I lived in Kielder from 1974-1995. I loved the way you could keep your front door unlocked. I could hear the river passing by my bedroom window, this was how quite it was. I am sure the upper north Tyne Valley would have been a more beautiful place to live if they hadn't built that white elephant (the Kielder dam). I remember when the dam was being built, walking down with my class mates from Kielder first school and measuring how far the water had travelled up the valley. I remember spending summers swimming in the river up by the little dam and winters on the back hill with my plastic bag, after the Bellingham school bus was unable to get through the snow. I couldn't drink in the pub until I was 18 because my mam was best friends with the landlady. The next pub was only 8 miles away down in Falstone or Stannersburn. The good old days.... Read more

Family Stories

My maternal grandfather was born in Stockton on Tees in 1892.  His father died, and his mother remarried resulting in him being farmed out to live with two maiden aunts who lived in "Tarset".  My brother and I have tried in vain to find exactly where this might have been (I now think that Tarset was in fact a parish).  His name was John (Jack) Robinson and the aunts' surname could have been Douglas.  He had an older brother, Robert, and a younger sister Mary who remained with her mother.  Robert married Eleanor Fenwick and emigrated to Australia.  Mary never married and died in Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne around 1982.
Is there anyone out there who can fill in some of the gaps for me?

Looking For Jean Laverick (maiden Name)

Does anyone know of Jean Laverick and her two sisters (Margaret and Anne) who lived in Holystone, Whitley Bay in the late 1940s? We were the NZ family who lived down the road and we played and went to Sunday School together. I would love to have contact with Jean and any member of her family after all these years. I shall be in Northumberland in June this year (2012) and it would be wonderful to meet up again. Ngaire (Atkinson)

Teachers as I remember were Bradbury, Barker & Craig for the girls dorms and Commander and Mrs Redman were the Heads [I think]!

My Happy Years

I attended Brownrigg from 1980 - 1985. I look back on those years with great joy (all though not at the time), throughs long summers and endless winters. I made a great many friends. I sometimes wish I could turn the clock back. I especially remember the teachers and staff, Mr Walton (headmaster), crazy man, Mr Bell (minty), hard but fair, Mr Main the next headmaster, Mr Barker music teacher), and my old foe Mr Jameson (maths teacher), always catching me having a smoke. As for the staff there was Harry and Hilary (caretakers), Sandra in the kitchen, and my old mate Roy (sparrow ) Desmond who has sadly passed away. I will look back on those years with great fondness. I have many happy memories to look back on, far too many to mention. People who read this may not recognize my name but they may remember my nickname (CHIPPY), regards, Michael Imrie.

Hello I attended Brown Rigg from 1960-1965. My best memories are the horses and the Sunday afternoon rides around the countryside, do you remember Bent Toe? The hours trying to learn side saddle. The hikes to Grassy Bridge? I have lived in Canada now for 34 years and have returned to Bellingham to visit and remember the memories of this place where I spent so many years.
