Dumfriesshire memories
Explosion at ICI Broom, 11th February 1954
It is 56 years this week since my beloved husband, WALTER JOHNSTON was killed in an explosion at the ICI plant known as The Broom, at POWFOOT, Dumfriesshire.He was 26 years old, tall, handsome (Gregory Peck look-alike), and my soul-mate. I was just 6 weeks off my 23rd birthday. Our beautiful daughter, Jenny, was 16 months old, and our baby son, Ian, just 5 weeks old that day. There were two men killed that day. The other man was from Annan, older, also married. How sad it seems to be that I cannot find any reference to this incident anywhere, and feel that it is just one more incident which has occurred, and is now forgotten. ICI did not care then, and have forgotten now. Not in my heart - it isn't forgotten! Every year, beginning with Christmas, I go over the joy of that time which turned out to be our last together. MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN DUMFRIES
I was born in Cresswell maternity hospital at Dumfries on May 13th 1959, my name was Ann Little. My mum came from Clerkhill, one side of the Nith and my dad came from the other, Sandside. They both met in their teens one night at the Loreburn Hall dance, and from there on they got married and had four children, I am the second child and their first daughter. We were brought up and lived in Lincluden all our lives and my mum and dad still live there to this day, as do I with my husband Charles. We all went to St Teresa's primary school in Lochside, and I can remember having to walk there and back in all sorts of weather, nobody had cars in thoses days. School days were really good as you got a two course hot meal a day, also a bottle of milk every morning before you started your lessons, if you were lucky you got two bottles of milk. National Service
I was posted to Dumfries in december 1951 to do 8 weeks training in the RAF Regiment. Although it was winter and rather rigorous, I did enjoy my time there and liked the town and remember looking around in Robert Burns house. I was 18 then, I am now 78... ( 2012) and will be 79 in June. These memories have always remained in my mind ...... I am relieved to say ! John Starley.
Old Mill
From 1954 to 1965, every summer, I would travel from Belgium and spend the entire month of July at the Old Mill in Hightae. I will never forget. I would get on Grandad's bicycle and visit my uncle in Lochmaben, I would also spend hours at the Burgess's farm nearby. I use to love biking to the Post Office in Hightae (J. Laidlaw was her name if I recall correctly). Souvenirs .. souvenirs.
I have never been back to Scotland since but I will simply never forget.

Childhood Memories
My Granny & Papa lived in the shepherds house in Kettleholm. William and Margaret Morrison. I loved to go and visit them or sleep over. I have lots of memories playing there as a child, watching my Papa bowling, or my dad, John Morrison and my uncle Keith Morrison play cricket at Castlemilk. My dad and uncle both worked for Castlemilk as mechanics. I remember having to be dragged to school by a boy who live close by, his name was Robert Davidson, I believe he is a policeman now. We lived at Beechwood by Castlemilk and I loved to play with Linda Hunter whose grandparents lived next door. I remember exploring the castle grounds and finding overgrown gardens full of gooseberry bushes. Lots of wonderful memories.

i was born on the 11 april at cresswell maternity hospital my maiden name is shields i lived at 15 knowehead road i started school in 1957 mr john young was the headmaster and mrs dickson was the secretary my memory of locharbriggs is when i started school
Hoddam School
I remember going to Hoddam School when Sydney Hope was the Head Master. I remember him being a very fair and nice person. There was a Mrs McBride and a Mrs Davidson that taught there. My Name was Morrison back then. I remember going to Watson's and The Mace for sweeties. I know that the school is no longer there which I think is a shame. It has been a long time since I last was there. I live in Vancouver, Canada now.
