Dr Joseph Priestley

Doctors Pond c1965

Having been a resident of Calne from 1944 to 1962, I often walked across this little bridge, mainly on the way to the recreation ground. There used to be (and possibly still is) a plaque commemorating Dr Priestley's discovery of Oxygen in this place. I believe the pond was situated just behind Harris' factory but when I last visited the town there was a supermarket there.

RE: RE: Dr Joseph Priestley

The supermarket replaced Wiltshire's shop and bakery. Doctor's Pond is, in fact, part of the River Marden and immediately behind the supermarket's car park. It can be reached by walking down a little pathway off Mill Lane right alongside the old mill (it was Rawlings & Phillips Mill and worked by the waterwheel when I walked past on the way to school in the late 1940s/early 1950s).

I believe Joseph Priestley discovered oxygen whilst living in a house on The Green and working at Bowood House where he had the use of rooms for his experiments.

Thank you David
I later attended the Bentley Grammar School and was in Priestley House. Also, my very first job was in Rawlings and Phillips at their base in Quemerford as a junior secretary.

Hi Judy, I've tried twice to send you a message from this page but the system keeps bringing up error messages. If you are the Judy Cook I knew in the'50ies and remember me maybe you could let me know and I'll give you my email address.

Not so much about J P, are you Judith Cook I went to Trinity School with? I hope you are well. I am Bob Daniels. I have some old pictures from Trinity, you are on one. I like old Calne better.
