Red House Inn, Cantley

Heresay says my boat was built in the 1880s for the then-owner of the Red House at Cantley, and was called "Lama" or possibly "Llama". Does anyone have any information on owners/landlords, or boating pictures of that period?

Thanks

St. Edmunds or St. Ethelbert?

I am looking for a church called Heringby or St Ethelbert Church where my ancestor Hugh Atte Fenne was buried in the chancel next to his mother. He bequeathed money to rebuild the tower, roof and porch around 1474 when he died. He also founded a college and an almshouse for the poor. Could this be the same... [more]

My Grandad

My grandad was a hairdresser in Hardley, he cut hair at his home. His name was Nicholls, anyone out there remember him?!

Brundall

Peggy from the USA, who sent a memory of Brundall, is my cousin. Arthur Henry Brigham was my grandfather, and he was the Signalman at Brundall railway station. I knew Sydney (her father) very well, and also spent many happy days at Brooms boatyard. Get in touch Peggy - it's your long lost cousin calling!!!

Happy memories in Brundall

Imagine my surprise while sitting here in U.S.A. looking at pictures of the village Brundall, the village that I was born in. I saw a picture of my dad, Sidney A. Brigham, launching a sail boat at Brooms Boat Yard.  The year of the picture, number 11, is 1955.  He had worked at Brooms since he was about 15 and worked... [more]

Riverside

I lived at Riverside (now renamed Bureside) from 1955 - 1961. I went to the village school and clearly remember Miss Freeman. I was baptised at the church, as was my younger brother. My dad was Edward (Teddy) Land who taught in Gorleston - he used to produce posters for village events. My mum was Ethel - she... [more]

My Home

My name is Keith Howlett and I was born there in 1946, my father came from Filby and my mother from Norwich. My father was a master grocer and then he became the post master. My first school was Stokesby and then I went to Duncan Hall School in Scratby. We lived there until 1961 when we moved to Norwich.

Hearts Cruisers

This gentleman is my grandfather Geoffrey John Hart. He owned and worked the business, Hearts Cruisers, with his two sons, Dick and Jack, and we spent many a happy hour there. In those days you could swim in the river as pollution was almost non-existent. Uncle Dick's many descendants are now mainly living in New Zealand but pay regular visits to... [more]

Norfolk Photographic Memories

Set on the banks of the River Yare, Cantley is dominated by its sugar refinery, which was built to process local beet. Customers at The Red House could not only see its smoke but also watch a steady stream of vessels hauling freights up to Norwich. There is a fine church with a Norman doorway.

Norfolk Living Memories

The hotel is on ground well below the level of the water in the river Yare, and is protected from flooding by the riverbank. Excess water has to be pumped up from the low-lying land and discharged along the rivers: this is now done by electric pump.

Norfolk - A Second Selection Photographic Memories

Although it is close to the sugar-processing factory, this village on the River Yare is an ideal spot for holidaymakers. The mooring is free, the meals at the hotel are good, and there is a ferry and a railway by which you can travel to Norwich, Lowestoft and Yarmouth quicker than by boat; no wonder Cantley is popular with visitors and...
