This is another view of this splendid Norman castle, built on the site of a Romano-British fortress by Gerald de Windsor as a wooden stronghold. His descendant, Nicholas de Carew, built much of the stone structure we can see today. In 1480 the Castle was leased to a Welsh lord, Rhys ap Thomas, who rebuilt and extended it. He was host to the last great tournament held in Wales – 600 knights feasted and jousted here for five days to celebrate him being made a Knight of the Garter. Today the ivy has been removed and the buildings have been carefully preserved. The tennis courts marked out in the foreground are now not in evidence!
