Mum's Shop
The shop behind where the car is parked used to belong to my mother, Freda Davies who still lives in Worksop. She took over from the Wards and the Hopkinsons took over from us. I lived at this shop for several years whilst I attended King Edward V1 Grammar School at Retford. I well remember the immediate surroundings of this photograph. The shop next door used to belong to the Padleys and the Fisher family lived behind these shops. Further along the road was the Methodist Hall, the Sherwood Ranger Pub, the Methodist Chapel which my grandparents used to attend and the village blacksmith. Opposite was the village policeman, the village post office, the fish and chip shop and the barber's shop.
My grandparents, Alf And Frances Spittlehouse, used to have Bridge House Farm at the bottom of the village and that is where I started life before moving to Low Street, Oxford Road and then Water Lane before moving into the shop. I went to the village Primary School when Mr and Mrs Graver were headmaster and headmistress and I always remember that, each Christmas, Squire Ramsden would send a threepenny bit to every school kid.
I left Carlton around 1959 and moved to Worksop before joining the Royal Navy in 1961, finally leaving the RN in 1995. I then worked for a Marine Engineering Consultancy in Chippenham and Bristol for a further 10 years before finally giving up work. I now live to the north of Bristol.
I visit Carlton now and again to refresh my memories and, although much of the old village of North and South Carlton is still as I remember it as a kid, Carlton has grown incredibly and now nearly joins up with Langold and Worksop.
I don't know if anyone remembers me but, if they do, I would love to hear from them.

RE: RE: Mum''s Shop
I am currently organising the restoration of the Carlton-in-Lindrick War Memorial on behalf of the Parish Council. We have a re-dedication service on 26th September 2009.
I am still desperately trying to contact relatives and descendents of the men remembered on the memorial so that I can invite them to the re-dedication service.
I notice the name SPITALHOUSE in the memories about the shop on High Road. We have a HORACE SPITALHOUSE remembered on the WW2 plaque on the memorial. Could this be the same family? The stated locations appear to be correct - Low Street & Bridge House Farm as I am also researching the men remembered and was looking at SPITALHOUSE when my computer crashed and I lost all my work and had to start again. I seem to remember that the SPITALHOUSE name had a connection with WATER LANE. Could that be correct? I also seem to remember a connection with the name GEE in the area of North Carlton being connected?
If it is possible to make contact with the writer of the article "Mum's Shop" I would really appreciate it and would love to have their company on 26th September Service and at the Buffet/reception afterwards.
Please make contact. Thank you,
Barry Bowles

RE: RE: Mum's Shop
I am trying to contact my lost relative from Carlton in Lindrick, my father was also called John and came from this town, his father was Sam, brother Alf. Alf had a few children, I think, Barry, Robert, John, Marlene and others I cannot remember. I had an aunt called Mary, and cousins called Elsie, and Aubrey. I have lost contact since my father died in 1979, but my mom kept in touch with Mary (until her death) and her daughter Elsie, also sending Xmas cards to Marlene and some of the others. My mother Marian has just passed away on the 12th June 2010 at home in Halifax, as I have no contact with any of the above people, I was hoping that if you are a relation you could inform some of them (if you know how) of Marian's passing. Thank you John Robert Withell
