The Old Workhouse
I lived very happily in the centre portion of the old workhouse,but unfortunately my cat was killed by a neighbouring greyhound. So, I have happy and sad memories of Ackenthwaite
Kay/Key Moss Farm, Witherslack
My great-great-great-grandfather JOSEPH FLETCHER Esq lived at Kay Moss Farm (as it was called then), now known as Key Moss. He is buried along with 3 of his children who died young and 1 daughter Ellen at St Paul's church. he had 4 living children: John - corn miller/merchant(Liverpool) Nicholas Richard - mathematics instructor, Royal Naval College(London). Nicholas's son Reginald becomes Lord Winster of Witherslack (1942). Ellen - dies 1878 aged 33, unmarried, buried St Paul's, Witherslack Mary Ann - fancy goods shop, 19 King Street, Ulverston. Unmarried. My dad took his mother (Annie), granddaughter of John Fletcher, to visit the area, friends and family around 1955, as her happiest childhood memories were of her holidays spent at the farm, riding the pony and trap up and down the tracks. She also went to the farm where two family members still lived. Also the spa cottages, where at the time everyone knew who she was as they all came out to talk to her. Church Where Grandparents Married
My grandparents, William Delaney and Phoebe Heighton were married here. The Delaney family lived in Burton for several generations. I believe Phoebe worked for the Misses Wilson prior to her marriage. They moved to Australia a few years after their marriage. I visited from Australia in 1980s and was delighted to find charming little church intact and loved.
Warm Bread.
I lived in Burton with my parents Stan & Hilda Hailey in the bakers shop in the square from 1956. I can remember my dad making fresh bread & cakes with the smell wafting through the house. I played football for Burton Thistle and helped run the club with many great friends. I moved away when I got married and my parents moved after retiring from the bakers shop, but I know my Dad missed making the bread for the village, he had a passion for it.

My Grandad
My grandad convalesced here, James Taylor. He died in 1976. I hope to take my mum to see the place this year. I have 3 postcards of the place, one of the statue, the bowling green and the entrance drive.
R & H Law
My Grandfather, Harry Dewhurst, was a partner/owner (I am not sure of the exact commercial position) of R & H Law (Main Street, Grange-over-Sands) in the 1950s. I remember R & H Law having all all four shop fronts as per this image. The shop sold carpets and furniture; including supplying carpets to local businesses. My late aunt told me that the Belsfield hotel in Bowness still has carpets supplied by my grandfather; who lived on Methven Road in Grange, with his wife Lily.
Anyway as a young boy I enjoyed trips to Grange and my grandparents, meeting my two cousins, and playing in the ornamental gardens. During the 80s/90s my two children enjoyed doing the same, and my daughter in particular now has the same love of Grange as I have; though with different memories. My memories are now only shared with my two cousins, my brother being too young to remember my grandparents.

THE GRANGE HOTEL
I worked at the Grange Hotel from 1983 until 1986. I lived in Grange for another six years at The Cottage, Graythwaite Manor. I left Grange in 1992 with my family when we moved to Australia. Enjoyed seeing the old photos of Grange, especially the one of the Grange Hotel.
