I have lived in the pretty village of Cartmel all my life and I love the quiet, calming atmosphere we have here. Once a friend and myself used to walk through the village with a nanny goat called Nancy and her 2 kids, we'd arrive in the square and rest at the market cross with the goats playing on the "fish slabs" which caused a lot of amusement to the visitors, who in turn must have thought we were slightly mad! Near by is the stately home of the Cavendish family, Holker Hall, once upon a time the Duke of Edinburgh used to compete in the carriage driving trials here and on the sunday himself and The Queen went to church at Cartmel. The Priory church is the main feature of the village(f1188). I once sang in the choir, we were on Songs of Praise and also on Look North, with Stuart Hall. Memories of Cumbria
First Kiss
My wife used to live in the house on the right, Number 5 Mill Close. When we were courting I would walk her home from our nights out and we use to sit on the bridge wall. This is where I had my first kiss from her, she was 17 and I was 19 years old. We have been married now for 46 years and have two children and 4 grandchildren. This is where it all started.

This is my father-in-law Austin A35 parked on the road, Alf Thompson was the owner.
Family And Friends Homes
My wife's family the Oldcorns live in this end house and our friend Collin Parington also lives on this row. Posted Dec 2010, hasn't changed for a hundred years.
My Grandad
My grandad was born here in 1923, his name was Clive John Lupton, also known as Cliff. He left when he was 17 and settled in Liverpool, but didn't speak much about the place. We returned with him in 2001 but he didn't really open up about anything, we think he had a conflict with his parents who were Gwladys Maude Faraday (maiden name) and John Lupton. My grandad has since passed away, me and my family would love to learn more about our relatives, if anyone has any information I would be extremley pleased to hear from you. I know my great grandad (John Lupton) was a game keeper at a nearby farm. Thanks.
Grandma's Cottage And Carrie's Bridge
My maternal grandfather's family came from Cark in Cartmel. The cottage nearest to the bridge was/is called "Beckside". Our family know it better as "Grandma's" house. I've found that she lived there from around the time she married, which would have been in the 1850s. She and her husband, Thomas Hadwin, had 12 children. The bridge was known as "Carrie's bridge", as one of my granddad's aunts played there as a child. I've discovered from tracing the family tree that Carrie lived there until her death in 1959. Quite a few of our relatives who lived here, worked in service at Holker Hall. I take after my granddad, apparently, as he was a bit of an artist, too. I have wanted to draw this scene for several years but the old postcard we have of the scene isn't very clear. I'm going to order a print of this photo soon to give to Mum and hopefully I will get a clearer view to fulfil my dream drawing. Edit: I've received my prints... Read more
