The Tabby Cat

Every day, on the way to primary school, Sherborne House I was driven past the Tabby Cat, from the Vicarage at North Baddesley where I lived. Every day I was told "Oh look, can you see the tabby cat?" A picture on the door I think it was supposed to be. I could never see it, and never knew where the others were looking...

My Memories of Chandler's Ford, Approx. L934/5

In the spring/early summer of 1935 I was admitted to Chanderr's Ford Sanitorium for treatment of tuberular glands in the neck. I spent six months there and have some happy memories of feeding the pigs, picking and eating fruit and other happy children. The treatment was excellent and I have only three unhappy memories. The first being treatment for hives when I was admitted. At bed time my hands were tied above my head and secured with gauguse bandages to the bars of the meal cot I slept in. Every morning two nurses came to remove the scabs that had formed during the night. The method used was dreadful, tweezers were used and the scabs ripped that had formed overnight. This percedure continued until the hives were no longe visible. The second memory is of a beautiful young girl (around 12'ish I would think). I awoke to see the nurses putting screens around her bed but from where my bed was I could see through the particitions of... Read more

Bad Memories

The Sanatorium c1955

I was in the Sanatorium, the children's section, aged seven in 1949 suffering from TB, my mother was sent there the following year and stayed in the woman's section, also with TB, and unfortunately she died there after just a few months. The Sanatorium was a very cold place with the windows open all the time, I was not allowed up and I stayed in bed for over a year. I woke up one morning with a terrible pain in my tummy but the nurse did not believe me and dragged me along the floor from the dormitory to the wash room along the passage and made me wash my face and clean my teeth whilst I was on my knees in agony, if it had not been for the other children telling her to fetch the doctor quick I may not have been here to recall this event. I was rushed to Winchester Hospital in the back of a car driven by a Dr Hart and my appendix was removed that... Read more

When I Was There!

I was a patient at the Sanatorium, the first time was when I was between 10 and 11 years old. I would have been there about 9 months at that time. I remember the apple orchard and there was an apple storage room. The Doctor was very kind to us children and would take us to pick apples and then we placed them in the storage room. I remember to this day the apple pie at lunch time on a Sunday, always apple pie, it had a lovely crispy crust and sliced apple and cloves. I have always put whole cloves in my apple pies when cooking them. I was a skinny kid when I went in, but when I went home I wieghed 12 stone!! They looked after us well, and I cant remember being sad at any time.
In 1952 I was admitted again and this time there were no children there. I met some lovely teens and older women... Read more

Childhood

Hursley Road c1955

My sister and I and our older brother, who did not survive, were born at 175 Hursley Road in the 1940s. The house is still standing and is now owned by Draper's Tools. We drove by on a cold, damp late October day in 2008 and took some pictures. We were disappointed to see that our beloved garden, so carefully tended by our parents, is now the parking lot! Perhaps the next time we will plan to see the changes that have taken place inside. My sister is now in Devon. I am in the US, in South Carolina.

My Grandad Wellman (Herb) was the Landlord at the Tabby Cat for several years until he retired. Before that he was at the Leigh (Eastleigh) & Cons Club before that!!

I remember the perimeter fence was of corrugated iron, my brothers and our pals used to climb through the gaps to steal the apples. Unfortunately the only trees to have eating apples were situated near to the main buildings. We used to swap sweaters and take it turns to run the gauntlet for them. No harm was intended or any damage done.

In later years we used to pick wild flowers for the residents and talk to the ones that were able to go outside.

Swimming Pool Drinks

Wow! I had almost forgotten about this pool. I have already recorded memories of swimming in the rivers at Bishopstoke, but when there was an epidemic of Polio we were all stopped from going into the river and went to the swimming pool instead. My favourite memory was having a cup of hot Bovril after an afternoon in the pool. It did become very crowded as it served Eastleigh as well as Bishopstoke and Fairoak. The girls changing booths were one side and the boys the other, although I think it was cheaper if you used the open hut at the far end.

The name A Webb on photographs rings bells, as my mother had one and I believe she went to school with him. His name was Arthur if that helps at all. Sorry cannot provide any further details as Mum passed two years ago.

Memories of A Long Time Ago

I remember queueing on a Saturday morning in the lane between the smell of the corner bakery and the Saturday morning flicks at the Regal when mum could afford it, old school friends Len Meek (his dad worked on the Queens), Cliff Holloway (his dad was a builder), Harry Hann (his dad owned Dorset Dairies next door to my birthplace at 15 Factory Road), the Baptist Church on the corner, Brehault the photographer, Chamberlayne Road School, I saw pictures of it recently and it looks much the same except air-raid shelters have gone, Blackman's sweet shop, next to a greengrocer and then a returned soldier cutting hair as if he had never been away, Mrs Luffman's sweet shop round the corner in High Street, further down to Torbocks and the Post Office, back to Market Street and I can remember Burton's tailors, they made me my first suit when I returned from National Service in 1957, wasn't there a Jewellers too - Ruffs? Thank you for your website, I am... Read more

Wartime Memories

Recreation Ground c1960

I remember going down to the Rec a million times, but mainly remember the soccer ground on the right, the bandstand, the back of the WVS where I had lunch for a few pence because Mum was at work in Pirelli's, and the the 'invasion' when the Yank troops were camped on the Rec. We would wander on the Leigh Road pathway hunting for 'lost' coins, a very lucrative foraging trip, and occasionally a comic or two. I also remember the speedway track (bicycle) and practising what is now mountain biking on the 'out of bounds' bomb sites.
