The Sanitorium - Mid1960's
I remember the perimeter fence was of corrugated iron, my brothers and our pals used to climb through the gaps to steal the apples. Unfortunately the only trees to have eating apples were situated near to the main buildings. We used to swap sweaters and take it turns to run the gauntlet for them. No harm was intended or any damage done.
In later years we used to pick wild flowers for the residents and talk to the ones that were able to go outside.

RE: RE: The Sanitorium - Mid 1960s
I don't remember the sanatorium but I do remember Leigh House adolescent unit hospital as I was a resident there from 1959 to 1962. There was a wonderful orchard there with apples of dozens of different kinds I have not seen since. In the middle was a shed where bees lived and there ws also a plum orchard. We could eat as many as we liked and sometimes I put some on the radiator by my bed to bake overnight. Did you ever scrump from L.H.? You could have got to it through a muddy donkey field off the Hursley road, jumped a little stream and gone through some trees at the end. Maybe it was a bit too brambly or something. I would also like to hear from anyone else who was a resident there. Best Wishes, Ruth
