Charlwood Garage The Old Forge
We lived in a 400 year old cottage at the back of The Old Forge, later Charlwood Garage. My brother was born in the cottage in October 1965. I am trying to locate any photographs of the old house behind the forge or any photographs of the Forge itself. The house was pulled down in the 1980s, it had been built on a well and every time it rained we were flooded out, and eventually had to move out. My father, Dennis Creswick, was manager of Charlwood Garage. Does anyone have any photos of the site?
The Ironmongers- The Broadbridge Family!
Currently researching my family tree and found that one of my ancestors married a William Broadbridge from Banstead and they moved to Charlwood. From 1861 - 1901 they owned/ran the Ironmongers which is now the Pine Shop!
I would love to see a photo of it when it was the Ironmongers if anyone has one, or any other info!
thanks
Parson Ancestors
My great great great granddad Samuel Parsons was buried here. You can see the headstone.
The Parsons family lived in the area over several generations and owned a farm.
Charlwood Brickyard
The James family moved to Charlwood for London in 1964 into the house next door to the brickyard. This was supposed to have been built by Mr Dearn from bricks made in the actual brickyard. The ponds were called the Raft pond, the Long Pond and the Castle pond where my brother Don and I used to fish. I seem to remember we caught lots of perch, roach and rudd. Eventually these were filled in as excavated material from building sites was dumped there. Do you recall the motor bike trials that were sometimes held here? Malcolm Dearn was a very good rider in his day but more often used to ride in Scrambles, aka Motocross these days.
Charlwood Brickyard
My parents ran the Rising Sun pub in Charlwood where I lived from 1954-64. I often went fishing and sometimes even swimming at the Brickyard pond which at the time was owned by Mr. Dearn, whose son Malcolm I went to school with. In addition to the pond there were many old workings that used to flood forming a network of waterways, many of which contained fish. I now reside in Southern California and have fond memories of the Charlwood area.
The Lodge, Mayfields Farm
Does anyone know of Mayfields Farm, Lowfield Heath, Charlwood Road, in 1935? I have found out that my Dad's sister {Joan Addy, 18 months old} drowned in the fishpond, around the day of the King's silver jubilee.
The Brickyard, Charlwood
I lived at Lowfield Park Lodge on the Charlwood Road (from the long-disappeared Lowfield Heath) from about 1950 to 1962, and I believe the house was demolished around 1965(???) to make way for the expansion of Gatwick airport.
My dad and I used to fish for carp in what we called the Brickyard Pond about a 5 minute drive from (I think) the pub that Dudley Wickens' dad used to be landlord of ... or have I got it all wrong?
My parents were Mary and George and my sister's name is Anne.
Mary Bailey was Personnel Manager at BMB - also on the Charlwood road from Lowfield Heath as I recall.
Does this ring any bells?.... I would love to have info/photos of the Brickyard and its pond .....and anything else remotely connected.
Many thanks
Alan Bailey
Little Foxes Hotel, Charlwood Road, Ifield Wood
I have been working at the above bed and breakfast for a number of years and am often asked by guests what was here originally.
Is there any one out there that remembers the original building? I believe it may have been a cottage called 'Brambles'
I know from guests who stayed here many, many years ago the original Little Foxes has developed into it's present building in a number of stages.
I am also curious as to why we are on Charlwood Road but there is another Charlwood Road running along the parimeter of the airport - I am assuming this must have been joined at one time.
So if there is any one who can throw some light on to this I would be most grateful.
Memories of Surrey
Mayfield Farm/House, Is Now The Flight Tavern
Has anybody any history of Mayfield Farm/house around 1935, like who owned it, and what type of farm it was, I have since found out that my Dad's sister [Joan] drowned in the fishpond when she was 18 months old, My Dad's[George] Dad also [George Addy] was a farm hand there with his wife Doris, who lived in The lodge on Mayfield farm, they moved from Woodchurch in Kent. Any whiff of anything would help.
Hyders Bungalow Charlwood Road
Trying to find information about Hyders bungalow, Dorothy & Charles lived there in the early 1940's.
Any information would be extremely grateful.

Lowfield Heath School. 21 pupils. Head Teacher, Miss Ryde, and assistant Miss Ivy Walder. Miss Walder later married Bob Riley. Where are some other pupils now? I remember Margaret Dudman, David Slaughter, Barbara Banks, Brenda Cheal. Later on the Old Tyme dances at the W.I. hut. Has anyone got old photos of those? Further south on the A23 the Ventura Cafe, and of course the Blue Pencil Cafe. I could go on, but some of you must be out there with some photos. Unfortunately photos taken by Surrey Mirror newspaper of those times 1945-1956 were destroyed in the fire at Ladbrook Road office, Redhill. I didn't own a camera then, but now realise how the memories could have been stored. Tony Tester.
Strathmore
My parents bought Strathmore which was a large house with 4 1/2 acres of garden just opposite the village shop on the road to Charlwood. We lived there as a family until about 1965, Peter Butterworth was a neighbour. Both my sisters Anne & Carolyn were married in Ifield Church. Friends who also lived in the village were John Reynolds and George Dutton. The Laker family were our gardeners. Strathmore is now a development of 54 Georgian style houses.
Barmaid
I worked as a barmaid in the Fox when Three Bridges had the bad flood and the pub was flooded, it was an old fashioned pub in those days with a public bar and saloon bar with darts on a Friday night, good old fashioned fun.
