Although it had decamped to Broomfield Road by the time this picture was taken, the Grammar School had formerly stood here - the entrance to the old buildings being just to the left of the Coach & Horses with its substantial sign. Further down, the shop with the clock and the 'eyes' was later removed in a road-widening scheme.

The smell of coffee probably wafted out from the shop at No.10 Duke Street. Basil Harrison was the town centre's grocer for many years who specialised in coffee. His coffee grinding machine stood just behind the shop window from where he could watch the passers-by and the town's changing life.
