The Shops
I think the shop next to Bon Marche was Hoddinots (butchers) and the last 'old' shop was Stanley Marks (bakers) and then a record/electrical shop run by Don Skinner - then a betting shop? In 1966 I lived for a while in the flat above Centra supermarket, one of the 'new' shops. Other new shops I remember: Hayletts, Harlins (hardware) and a hairdressers on the end. Happy days.

RE: RE: The Shops
I had forgotten Hoddinotts, but I remember it as being further up. You're right about Stanley Marks bakers as the last "old" shop for a time. After it closed, Ackerman's opened as one of the new shops. There was also a new greengrocer opened there. Mr. White (a friend of my father), owner of the original greengrocers, promised to put him out of business. Ultimately, it was the other way round.
Nobody has yet mentioned that on the other side of The Meadway was Forbuoys and a cafe which, during the 1950s was called The Armadale and gave out the welfare orange juice and cod liver oil. It later became the Penguin Cafe, very useful for we bus drivers, and then Robin Hood Motor Spares.

I remember Forbuoys, even buying Tizer and tiger nuts in there when sweets were still on ration! And the Armadale cafe. My mum used to get orange juice, cod liver oil and cod liver oil & malt from the chapel at the Green Street Green end of Worlds End Lane. When I gave cod liver oil & malt to my children in the '70s it made them gag - I remembered it as being delicious but it most certainly was not.
My sister worked in Walkers, by then Jack Roberts, in the early 70s; they sold wonderful bacon, amongst other things. I remember the lovely smell in the chemists and the hairdressers, which I believe was originally Maison Mollins. Amazing, the information we have stashed away and what fun it is remembering.
