NEW COURT SCHOOL ON LANDSDOWN ROAD, CHELTENHAM

Lower High Street c1955
Enlarge photo |  More about this photo

I have been told that New Court School does not exist anymore but there is an Insurance office there. I went to New Court School and boarded there with four other East African girls from Tanzania and Kenya. I was only 10 years old. My headmistress for Miss Peplow, my class teacher was Miss Warren-Smith and the matron was Miss Scott. I remember school friends Susan Imhoff, Gala and Susan Mitchell, Gala was a lovely ballet dancer. There were two day boys too and I think one was Paul, I don't remember the other one's name. I am writing my memoirs and feel very nostalgic for Cheltenham and the year I spent at school. I wonder if anyone still remembers New Court School. I have some pictures of sports day at school and the school itself.

RE: RE: NEW COURT SCHOOL ON LANDSDOWN ROAD, CHELTENHAM

By chance I found your recollection of New Court School Cheltenham. I also went to this School, and have very happy memories of my time there, Miss Eleanor Peplow was an inspiring Head Mistress, I still have my Autograph Book in which she wrote the word "Courage", which if I remember rightly, was the school motto. I went with my parents to Madame Forma to purchase my school uniform. The first girl I met was Susan Scott Cooper, who was a weekly boarder, her father had a jeweller's shop on The Promenade and we became good friends. Both I and my younger sister Jane came from South Wales. I remember those days so clearly, the teachers, the pupils, greek dancing classes at the Rotunda, and my favourite, Saturday riding lessons at Miss Parry's establishment near the now famous Racecourse! All so long ago, but not forgotten, I wish you every good wish with your memoirs, from: Julia Convisser (nee Jones)

RE: RE: NEW COURT SCHOOL ON LANDSDOWN ROAD, CHELTENHAM

My brother and I attended New Court when my parents came to England from India in 1947. My brother was only there for a short time and I don't remember how long I was a boarder there. I only remember being teased about my surname which was Routledge, being called "rats legs" I got very upset and struck back, winding the girl teasing me by hitting her in the stomach with my Mason Pearson hair brush, and being pacified by Matron. Miss Peplow was Headmistress at the time I was there, I remember going to the Pump Rooms for ballet lessons in my bronze ballet shoes. My interest has been reawakened as my grand daughter is in Uni in Cheltenham and her digs were in Lansdown Road.

RE: RE: New Court School on Lansdown Road, Cheltenham

I was at New Court school until 1969, when it closed. It was a very sad time, not least for the staff who had no jobs left. I boarded there for a short while before I went to the Ladies' College. I have extremely happy memories of the school with its bizarre Navy related traditions. I remember Mrs Long, Miss Saunders and Mrs Cross very well. I later worked for Westbury Homes in the 1980's, who took over the building. It was extremely odd being back in the old school but some parts were recognisable, and of course the actual building was lovely. Miss Peplow became very infirm and I remember visiting her with another ex pupil at perhaps a retirement/nursing home near Christchurch Road. I have kept in touch with Mrs Long, now in her 90's who has some hair raising stories of life as a staff member there. Nicky Weir
