I used to attend St. Marys without the walls church service every Sunday and eventually in 1956 got married there by the Rev. Digby Thomas. My Father had been a choir boy in that church many years before, having lived in Handbridge I used to visit my relatives in Handbridge every week, where my great Uncle worked for the Duke of Westminsters estate as a gardener. HI I'm a newbi. I was born in Chester in 1945 and can, as a small child, remember running all around the city in the 1950's. I was born at the City Hospital and I lived at 10 Stanley Place. The first school I went to was St Mary's on the Hill. I can also remember attending the school which is now the heritage center. I remember going to Chester Zoo as a child with my parents and grandparents during the 1970s, each visit was really great, except for the hippos who made one of the worst smells I have ever smelt - it was nauseating!
It was probably 1947 when I was first introduced to Chester. My grandmother Minshall had many friends, most of them had one thing in common, their appearance....without being too unkind, they were all kind of 'odd looking'...well, certainly to a young child.
