West Hatch School
I lived my early years in the grounds of Great West Hatch Hospital (my father was the gardener there), next door to the school site. I can remember the school being substantially finished by the time I was 11 (1957), though my parents persuaded me (against my better judgement) not to go there for my secondary schooling. I have older memories of the land as part of Furze's farm, and helping stack sheaves of wheat at harvest time.

RE: RE: West Hatch School
My wife went to this school. I used to know it when it was a cornfield, where we would play. There was a large wrought-iron gate where the present day entrance is now, that was used by the Manor House next door, which I knew as Great West Hatch Hospital. I used to play in the grounds with Roger Crabb, who lived there. It was an adventure playground.
I remember:
The barn next to the cottage, where a Barn Owl flew.
The Victorian stables, with wrought iron grills.
The room before the cottage door, where we played with our toys.
The 'secret' tunnels, where we daren’t go down.
The steps down to the enclosed garden, with the wonderful trained fruit trees.
The Mulberry Bush, on the front lawn.
The massive Cedar Tree, with sticky cones, on the back lawn.
The Rhododendron bushes, we ran in and out and around.
The elderly Women Patients that walk across Luxborough Lane to Little W.H.Hospital.
It was quiet then, and we lucky to have known this.

I also went to West Hatch and have memories of many detentions for not wearing my blazer. Year 1988-ish. I lived in Lambourne Road, 149, the big house with the sweet shop on the corner. wonder17@blueyonder.co.uk
