By the mid 1800s Church Stretton had become a holiday resort for people keen on country walking, and many hotels were established to serve this market. On the side of the hills of the Long Mynd houses crowded at all levels, giving rise to the area's nickname of 'Little Switzerland'.

My grandfather Bert Hedger managed the garage attached to The Hotel during the late 1920s. It belonged to Phillip West who was a mill owner from Manchester and was managed by his sister-in-law Lillian Harker. It was a five star hotel and all the best people stayed there.
