My Cilybebyll Youth

I was brought up in my youth by my father's brother Rees Emmanuel and his wife Erica, most of my own family having been killed in an air raid in Pontrhydyfen on 11/5/1941. We had lived in Trelewis and Bedlinog and came to Cilybebyll in about 1946,my uncle being the Rector there. They also had a daughter Sonia ,born when we lived in Bedlinog. Our life there was very much linked to the church of course but as the only teenager in the hamlet I sometimes felt a bit lonely. The beautiful countryside along with my 3/4 size bike were my best friends. I attended Ystalyfera Grammar School and even played one game of Rugby for the Swansea Valley Schoolboy team!!!
I have lived in New Zealand for almost 48 years but my time in Cilybebyll will always be a precious memory.

West Glamorgan memories

Birthplace

I was born in Curtis Row, Ynysmeudwy Road in the early 1950s. My late father was a coal miner and my mother worked at the watch factory.

We moved to London around 1959 as there was a lack of work. I am now trying to build a family tree. My grandparents had eleven children and lived in Ystradgynlais on the Gurnos estate.

If anyone has any information on the Nicholls family I would be so grateful.

Many thanks.

Pontardawe

I don't recognise this as Pontardawe. I lived there for 56 years, but this looks nothing like it. I just don't recognise anything in this photo.

Pontardawe Cross

The photo you show is exactly as I remember Pontardawe in the 1960s. I was born at 7 James Street in 1955 opposite Davies the ironmongers. Cherished momories I will never forget.

James W Randall (b1933)

I have never been to Pontardawe, I am actually looking for anyone who knows my father and his family. His name was James William Randall, his mother was Louie May Randall (nee Lobb), his father George W Randal.. Anyone with any information please get in touch. Many thanks Kirsty

Paynes

It's not a memory or not mine anyway, I'm hoping it might be yours... I'm looking for information on my Great Grandad, Walter Payne, born around 1891, I think he originated from London, he married Kate Thompson and live in Cwmgorse. Any help please email me :)
