Elmshott Lane

A Memory of Cippenham.

The road is called Elmshott Lane and ran from the Bath Road at Everetts Corner, past the Junior School on the left in the picture, down to the junction of Mercian Way and the green. Mercian Way in those days was very pretty with Gregory's Farm and house on one side, the park halfway down and lovely orchards for scrumping at the far side behind Greg's. Old Mr Gregory used to patrol here with his gun half-cocked, slung over his arm, quite often one of us kids would be up one of the plum trees trying very hard to keep still and not let any of the plums fall out of our pockets!

I attended Cippenham Junior school after leaving the Infants School during the early 1940s during WW11. There was a large water tank in the main playground in case of incendiary bombs during air raidsand a large air raid shelter at the back of the school which we had to use when the warning siren went off. We always carried our gas masks with us and stayed in the shelter until the all clear sounded. Our class teacher was Miss Widdington who was strict but fair and I have very pleasant memories of her. That is almost 70 years ago and I am now approaching 80 and live in the USA.
I went to the junior school from the early 60's until 1965.
The bomb shelter was still there then and we used to 'dare' each other to run through it - probably full of spiders!
I can also remember making a big slide from the top of the big playground - not the one in from of Mr Rackstraw's office, with the sign ''YOU MAY GO ON THE PLAYING FIELD'' in the window - we used to giggle over that as the letters were close together and read ''GOON''!
Anyway, the slide went from the top and we used to stop by skidding into the school wall at the bottom - no 'Elf & Safety in those days!
