A Girlfriend in Wythenshawe in 1966
Wythenshawe may seem an uninspiring large urban sprawl but to this 20 year old in 1966 it was rather special as I met a lovely girl called Anne Senyszyn there. I had just started work for a bank in Manchester and she was in a local sixth form finishing her A Levels before going off to college for teacher training.
We explored local countryside together, went to dances and the cinema and enjoyed a magical summer of fun. I was quite blind to the suburban Wythenshawe setting as we spent several happy months together in Manchester and the nearby Peak District. I drove my old black Ford Prefect and she navigated me around the area which she knew so much better than me as I had only recently arrived to work in Manchester. Happy days and happy memories still fondly recalled more than forty years later!
Growing Up
I was born in Withington Hospital and brought up for many years in Baguley Hall, I always remember the good times where all the children and the parents came out to play as one, no nastiness, no keep up with the Jones, we all helped each other, also if your parents were out or late, you could always go to the neighbours and wait (safely), one neighbour was I think called John, he was to me a mountain of a man with very long hair, I always remember he used to hide sweets in his hair as it was that long. The best times was bonfire night where everybody went collecting wood, parents made toffee apples and bonfire toffee, and lots of other nice things, then on the night we had fireworks, sparklers, and lots of toffees, but home made, I also enjoyed playing cricket on our green outside the house, where everyone joined in, parents included, such a good time, I went to Baguley Hall School, and one year... Almonds Bakery
I have moved around the country since leaving Wythenshawe in 1977 but I recently returned to Roundthorn through my work and visited Duerrs Factory. Whilst there I was convinced that this was previously Almonds Bakery where I worked from 1973 to 1975. This brought back memories of visits to the Black Boy (?) at lunch time with my work mate Helen Bloor for a plate of chips! Can anybody out there confirm whether Duerrs on Floats Road was in fact Almonds in a previous life? Almonds later became Mothers Pride then RHM.
Stockton Road
I was born in Flixton before moving with my parents to Stockton Road Chorlton-Cum-Hardy. At the time my dad was working at Metrovicks in Trafford Park before getting a job working for the MOD at The Royal Ordinance Factory - Patricroft - Eccles. I was one of eight children consisting of 6 boys and 2 girls, and I was born in 1941. My dad's parents lived just around the corner from Stockton Road in York Road and my mother's lived in Chester. One of her brothers was appointed Sherriff and also Mayor of Chester. I started school at Oswald Road primary and finished at Chorlton Park. I have fond memories of both schools and many of my old school mates. Myself and friends from our road used to play football and cricket with local lads in the park on Beech Road and occasionally on the green facing the Horse & Jockey pub. During school holidays we used to spend a lot of time playing along the brook that runs... Read more
Family in Firswood Area 1912--1980
In 1938 my grandfather moved from Oakfield Avenue nearby to 39 Ryebank Road when he bought a newly built semi-detached house for the princely sum of £800! My dad was then 27 and had the same first name as his dad. Very useful having his name on the title deeds when the old man died! Ryebank Road is off Seymour Grove and goes through to Longford Park. We moved in in 1959. At one time, our family GP lived just around the corner in Erlington Avenue. He just happened to be the Manchester United retained team doctor and for a while Pat Crerand lived opposite him in a three bed semi, owned by the club. When Pat moved on, another United player moved in -- ex-Arsenal Ian Ure.
Montgomery House YMCA Hall of Residence
I was a student here between 1966 and 1969 and loved the place! Although it was an all-male Hall of Residence we organised events with other Halls from the University and Colleges. I was the social secretary for my Hall and got to meet some lovely people; although it is now more than forty years later I still remember very fondly Gill Bagshawe, Rosemary Smith, Lil Howie, Val Hugill, Gail Willson who were all nurses nearby!
I organised weekend trips to the Peak District and Lakes and sometimes hired entire youth hostels to accommodate our groups. Many of the residents of my Hall were from overseas and I recall some from Greece, Russia and Aden in particular. I spent three happy years studying and working plus a lot of partying too!
Levenshulme/Gorton
I am 58 years old, born in Moss Side, raised in Levenshulme, and have lived in Gorton near the old tannery on Tan Yard Brow for 25 years now. I have an old film (now on DVD) of old Gorton, if anyone wants a copy, email to: davidevanbroome@hotmail.co.uk or contact me on Facebook and I will send them one, look forward to hearing from anyone.
