Clayton Le Moors Cinematograph And Temperance Billiard Hall

A Memory of Clayton-Le-Moors.

I am wondering of anybody can share with me any memories or stories about the old cinema and billiard hall at 244 Whalley Road (now Ribble Valley Recliners).

I am using the building for a project at uni and I want to know the local's stories of the building as there is not much information that I can find. I am interested in personal stories, what you remember of the building and what the building has been in the past (I am told it was a carpet shop at one point?) if anyone can give me an idea of dates?

I am also interest in the small businesses around the area and how they have changed over the last hundred years. I am also interested in the big change of the M65 how this effected the town.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You

Emma

This request is almost four years old, but I will respond regardless. My great-grandmother, Eliza Adelaide Knight, owned and operated a tripe shop from 1900 until 1949 at 158 Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors. Her house was torn down to make way for the motorway, but I managed to visit from my home in Pennsylvania in 1978 before it was razed. My mother was brought up by her and lived in the shop for most of her young life. She talked about the Star Cinema many times, and I think this must be the cinema you are referring to. She started going to see the "pictures" when they were still silent, and she knew the names of the piano players who would accompany the film. She would have been about ten years old when "talkies" started. Accrington and the surrounding areas have a web site, and the tripe shop and its location were discussed in detail as well as other Clayton-related trivia. http://www.accringtonweb.com/forum/index.php
