Re Fred And Violet Cole Who Looked After The Donkeys.
[This photo shows Arthur Shackson with the donkeys in Clovelly - identified by Mr Graham Shackson in a comment on this 'memory'. Arthur Shackson was for many years porter for the New Inn Hotel in the village. Fred Cole did have his own donkeys for several years carrying the visitors up the cobbled street.

I was looking on the internet for information about my late great-uncle and aunt, Fred and Violet Cole, who used to look after the donkeys in Clovelly for many years. I would be most grateful to anyone with memories of my uncle and aunt as I wonder about their life in Clovelly, and would love to hear from anyone who might be able to shed some light! Aunty Vi died almost 5 years ago, and although she used to tell me of her life in London and Clovelly it would be lovely to know more.
Thank you.

RE: RE: Re Fred And Violet Cole Who Looked After The Donkeys.
Hi there Kim,
I have read your comments on Fred and Violet Cole who I knew very well as I was born in and grew up in Clovelly village, my Dad having been a fisherman all his life other than his time spent in the Navy during the war. The picture here is not of Fred but is of Arthur Shackson who was for many years porter for the New Inn Hotel in the village. Fred did have his own donkeys for several years carrying the visitors up the cobbled street. In London he was a printer by trade and came to the West Country where they settled at a little place called Clawton [I think]. I know that he used to print all the business cards ie B & B cards and the likes for all the people in the village and the surrounding area and they did B & B in their tiny cottage at the end of Providance Row at the back of the New Inn.
More info later.
